| The village of Colincamps lies
seven miles north of Albert, in the Department of the Somme. Towards the end of January
1916, the 36th (Ulster) Division was held in readiness to take over a portion of the line
here. When the Division arrived in this sector two of its battalions, the 8th and 15th
Royal Irish Rifles, were transferred to the 10th and 11th Brigades of the 4th
Division respectively. In exchange the Ulster Division recieved three battalions from the
4th division, the 1st Rifle Brigade, 1st Royal Irish Fusiliers, and the 2nd Monmouths.
Three days later the Ulster Division took over the left sector of the 4th Division front,
astride the Mailly-Maillet/Serre Road, Brigade Headquarters being in the former village.
It remained here for almost three months enduring a most unpleasant winter, with 'trench
foot' prevalent due to the men having to constantly stand in waterlogged trenches.
|
||||
| It was believed at this time,
that the Ulster Division would in fact be broken-up. The Divisional Commander, General
Nugent, argued that "three brigades of Ulstermen, in the division would be of greater
fighting value than is at presently constituted." Nugent's suggestion was favourably
recieved, and although the men were sad to leave the 4th Division, they were delighted to
be once more back with 'their' division. In February 1916, with the division now back to
its original formation, it took over it's first line with 108 Brigade on the right, 107 on
the left and 109 in reserve. Headquarters were in the village of Acheux. Five months later
the three brigades would have a baptism of fire on the 1st July at the Battle of the
Somme.

| The cemetery at Sucrerie lies one
mile east of the village of Colincamps on the Mailly-Maillet Road, and was originally
called the 10th Brigade Cemetery. It was begun by the French in the summer of 1915 and was
enlarged by the British between July of that year and December of 1918. During this period
French and German troops were also buried in the cemetery but were removed to other
cemeteries after the Armistice. The cemetery now contains the graves of 827 soldiers from
the United Kingdom, 65 from New Zealand and two from Canada. There are 74 unnamed graves
and seven "Special Memorials" erected to the soldiers from the United Kingdom or
believed to be buried in the cemetery, two of which are Irish. Some graves contain more
than one soldier, and on some graves more than one headstone is erected. The cemetery is
enclosed by a low brick wall and is planted with lines of cherry trees.
Listed below are the names of soldiers buried in the cemetary who were Irish or who served with an Irish regiment.
