The grave of R.Chesnutt,
Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers
On 7 June 1917, the 36th (Ulster) Division and the 16th (Irish) Division were two of the three divisions which spearheaded the attack in the Battle of Messines. Both divisions were successful in taking all their objectives, losses for both divisions were light in comparison to those suffered at the Somme the previous year.
Many of the men killed during the Battle of Messines are buried in the cemetery.
Adjacent to the Cemetery is the Memorial to the 16th (Irish) Division. The memorial is of granite and is in the form of a Celtic Cross. It replaced the original wooden cross which stood here.
The cemetery was made after the Armistice by the concentration of isolated graves and small cemeteries surrounding Wytschaete.
